| It's a new year and I am finding it hard to be happy. My life seems to be passing me by. I'm nearly sixty and I have made so many resolutions but each year I seem to be in the same place. How do I make this one different? | |

| I don't think it is unusual to think that time is passing by too quickly when we get older. I think it is partly to do with the fact we have so much to do and partly that most of us are well into the last half of our lives so we do have less time to do things. I think resolutions are interesting things. Why do we decide there is one day in the year when we will make them? I think that's the first mistake. We only do things that we really want to do and that by doing them will make a big difference to our lives. If that's the case then numerous events will occur in the year when a resolution would be a good idea. I would suggest that you take yourself off somewhere quietly and make a list on a piece of paper of the ten resolutions that you have not achieved. Now ask yourself the following questions. 1. What will I achieve if I meet this goal? 2. What will be different in my life if I achieve it? 3. What has blocked me up to now? 4. Is it still a relevant resolution for today? If as I imagine several have passed their sell by date and are just there because they have always have been, I suggest you ditch them! Now take a new sheet of paper, and transfer the questions you really want to do and add any others. Answering the questions above now prioritize your list. Which one will really make a difference? Now write this one on a clean sheet of paper. Now see if you can make this goal into something really possible to do. Follow the acronym SMART Specific Measurable Agreed Realistic Time bound You may want to add two extra bits and make it SMARTER Ethical Review able Once you have completed this stage now divide the task into a series of steps. So for example if you wanted to lose 2 stone break it down into manageable chunks with dates, eg I will lose 7 pounds in the first month. Each month review where you have got to and set the next mini goal. Only work on one thing at a time, hence the prioritizing - do the top priority first and then work down the list, throwing away those that are no longer relevant. If you follow this I think you'll find you feel completely different by this time next year. One last word don't forget to celebrate when you have achieved it! |
