I'm a 51year old man and have just been made redundant

I'm a 51year old man and have just been made redundant from my city job. I expect I could get another post but am beginning to wonder if this is the time to do something different. How do I decide?

I'm making the assumption that you have been given some redundancy pay so you are in the fortunate position of having a little time to think. Many in your position just go to the nearest recruitment agency. This approach never opens the mind to exploring the alternatives. The fact that you are thinking about this makes me feel that it is worth you spending some energy on this.

A very useful exercise is to imagine your life as a time line. Stand at one end of the room and imagine a line along the floor. Imagine this being the first 25 years of your life. Work slowly along it focusing on the memories of what you did. Remember your first day at school, birth of siblings, great outings etc. When you get to 25 fold up your line and work now from 25 to 50, doing exactly the same thing, putting in all the land-marks both personal and those from your career. Now come back to the beginning again and imagine the line going from 51 - 76. Walk slowly along this line imagining all the things you've ever wanted to do, work wise, and in your personal life.
Don't hold yourself back from putting anything in, even if you don't know how you would do it.
Jot them down as you go along.
Now stand at the end of your line. (I've made it 76 as it is likely you will have retired by then). Look back down your line and your roles. Is there anything you have missed? Anything else that you'd really like to do? Add these to your line. Now sit down and separate the parts into a) work ideas b) home and pleasure activities.

Now prioritize the work ideas with the one that most appeals. Is it a city job? If so go for it.
You will feel much more positive about it, as you will know you have chosen it. If not, take your number one idea and ask yourself
a) Does it pay what I need to earn?
If no, go to your second choice
b) Are there any studies I need to have in this area?
Then ask
c) What would I need to do in order to apply?
d) Who am I going to get information from?
e) When am I going to do this?
f) Do I need to research this further by getting some work experience?
g) Do I need to re-qualify?
h) Can I afford to do this? Would I need a grant?

Now create an action plan with dates so you know all the steps you are going to take. It may take a bit of courage to change direction but it will be worth it in the end.

Good Luck!
