| Julie: It's nearly Christmas! I'm waking at night worrying. | November 26, 2009, 11:10 am |
| I'm in a panic as it's only a few weeks to Christmas. I'm waking at night worrying about how I'll get everything done – presents, food and so on. How do I stop the worry? | |

| Are you someone who worries about everything and this is your habit or is it just Christmas? I doubt it. We all have particular behaviour patterns that began when we were children. Some still have their uses but others are redundant. By now, you'll have learnt planning skills so all you have to do is utilise them. I'm going to give you some general tips on how to stop worrying. You might also find it helpful to listen to my telephone advice on this. • Check that your response is appropriate to the event – it's only Christmas, not a major disaster. • Say 'stop' to yourself when you find yourself going round in circles. It's your head, so put some nice thoughts in it. • Choose a time to sit down and make a detailed plan of everything you have to do, write it down, and then follow it like painting-by-numbers. • Don't focus on things you can't do anything about now – like stuffing the turkey. Concentrate on things you can do – like buying presents. • Do some exercise every day (not just before bed). Exercise uses up energy and our body responds by wanting to replenish itself through deep sleep. And do relaxation exercises just before you go to bed. • Listen to a story tape or some music if you're having trouble getting off to sleep or if you wake up in the night. (If you're sleeping next to someone, use earphones – otherwise, you'll have another problem!) The key to facing what sometimes seem insurmountable problems is to eliminate the stress factor. Here's to a Happy Christmas! |
