| Ang: How do I stick to my New Year Resolutions? I need help!! | January 5, 2010, 11:11 am |
| Every January, I make a new resolution. It's often the same thing that I did the previous year, because I don't stick to it! This year, I really want to. But how? | |

| I'm sure you're not alone in this. Allow me to explain an idea called 'well formed outcomes' which might help you. If you're going to achieve something, you need to state it in the positive. In other words, you need to ask yourself, 'what do I want and what will I gain if I achieve it?' You also need to have a way to test whether you've been successful or not. For example, if your goal has been to get yourself fitter through regular exercise, check if you can now run upstairs without getting out of breath. You need to divide your goal into small achievable steps, setting your first step. In this instance, it might be investing in an exercise DVD or enrolling at your local gym. Then decide when you're going to do whatever it is by actually writing in your diary the date you will achieve your first step. Repeat this with each successive step until you've reached your goal. If necessary, sit down and decide who can help you most – it might be a personal trainer; it might be a friend who'll go on the journey with you. Finally, plan how you'll celebrate when you've reached your target! |
